Client Profile

Drylands was one of New Zealand’s first wineries to produce vibrant and intensely flavoured Sauvignon Blanc from the famous Marlborough region. Drylands is an innovative and advanced New Zealand winery, producing excellent Sauvignon Blanc from the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley.

Project Overview

Drylands Winery engaged us to solve some particular effluent disposal compliance issues that had become ‘red-flagged’. Using SmartWatch – our proactive effluent monitoring solution – Drylands was able to ensure that their wastewater and effluent disposal and maintenance systems were sustainable, compliant and simple to manage going forward.

Solution

SmartWatch proactively identifies and rectifies issues with hardware, design and compliance.

Our trained staff and expert design engineers undertook a thorough review of the effluent/water disposal system and submitted a management and maintenance plan to the client which, on agreement, was undertaken to meet compliance and operating goals.

SmartWatch carried out fault-finding surveys and formulated practical replacement and maintenance plans, in conjunction with winery management. Service schedules were established, as well as a fully compliant testing regime – with the express aim of ensuring regulatory compliance.

Results

Having SWE focus on updating their failing effluent disposal system freed the client up to focus on the seasonal demands at the winery – secure in the knowledge that effluent/water disposal disbursement was expertly managed, and they would be kept informed of progress.

Together we implemented a maintenance plan that complies with resource consent conditions and company operating goals, enabling smooth running of winery processes, and ensured key staff weren’t being distracted by ancillary processes.

The SmartWatch programme outlines next steps in handling or treating waste, as well as implementing and maintaining agreed schedules to ensure compliance. It encourages wastewater efficiency, improves owner/ manager awareness of the importance of quality in waste design and servicing, and delivers real operational, financial, environmental, and production improvements for clients.

Based on the success of SmartWatch to date with winery clients there is scope for it to be rolled out to other wastewater management systems and effluent disposal users in other industry sectors.

What the Client Said

“SWE had the experience to understand the compliance requirements and was able to relate these in a practical application.”
